Ohio Lazy Prosecutors Amendment flys to the ballot to make sure that only the pre-trial wealthy are free and only poor citizens overpopulate our county jails.
If passed, big win for the bail industry and the status quo.
Prosecutors hope to bypass evidentiary requirements for jailing citizens pre-trial by requiring enormous bonds.
This is in no way reform, only political cover for Ohio Supreme Court justices caught on the wrong side of the issue.

Let’s use this crisis to get better at this. Being too poor to make bail shouldn’t be a death sentence. Public health in a pandemic is one good reason to revisit unnecessary incarceration. Close behind are social justice (racial disparities) and cost.
