πΏοΈπ BIG NEWS!!! 13 squirrels have officially graduated to our outdoor pre-release enclosure! ππΏοΈ
This is one of the most exciting milestones in the rehabilitation journey. After weeks of growing, learning, and gaining confidence, these young squirrels are now taking their next step toward freedom.
β¨οΈSo, what is a pre-release enclosure?
A pre-release enclosure is a safe outdoor habitat designed to help rehabilitated squirrels transition from indoor care to life in the wild. Over the next 3 to 4 weeks, these 13 squirrels will remain safely inside the enclosure while experiencing the sights, sounds, and challenges of the natural world.
During this important learning period, they will:
π³ Experience changing temperatures and weather conditions
π Become familiar with outdoor smells and environmental cues
π¦
Learn to identify potential predators and recognize danger
πΏοΈ Observe wild squirrels as they navigate the trees, forage, and communicate
πΏ Strengthen their climbing, jumping, nest-building, and survival skills
The pre-release enclosure gives them the opportunity to build confidence and independence while still having the safety and support they need before their final release.
Watching them explore, leap through the branches, and prepare for their future in the wild is incredibly rewarding. We couldn't be more proud of these amazing squirrels and how far they've come!!
Please join us in wishing these 13 graduates good luck as they spend the next few weeks learning the ways of the wild before their big day of freedom!!! ππΏοΈ
The graduates are requesting nuts in the shell..... πππ°π₯

π Hi friends!!! We are in desperate need of a few essentials!!! π
We go through more than 25 pounds of Mazuri Rodent Blocks a week. We are down to our last bag. These are a major necessity and part of a complete diet for squirrels. All squirrels in care care have access to Mazuri blocks 24/7, but they're essential for the previously released squirrels as well.
We also need some more nuts in the shell to help teach our squirrels going into pre-release how to crack them, once found in the wild.
We could also use some Cheerios, for our young babies learning to eat solids. Honey Nut, Whole Oats, Multigrain, any will help!!
Quick links will be in the comments under the pictures.
Honorable mentions..... we're also about 1/3 of the way through our specialized formula. So, any monetary donations will go towards that , unless anybody wants to spend the $160 to purchase it. π

Sorry, but us rehabbers are exhausted & honestly a ridiculous amount of time is being wasted arguing with finders. Every single day we are spending sometimes literal HOURS begging people to hand over babies and injured animals while being told βGoogle/ChatGPT said thisβ or βI already gave it water/formula because Iβm not letting it starve.β There are reasons we tell you NOT to give food or water. A cold baby cannot digest formula. Wrong feeding causes aspiration. Every species is fed differently with different formulas, amounts, schedules, weights, and methods. Water can kill dehydrated wildlife if done incorrectly. We are not trying to be difficult. We are trying to keep them alive long enough to actually help them.
π©And please do not say you βfound another rehabberβ just to avoid listening/keeping the creature etc. We are all full, networking constantly, and we know who is who.
In North Carolina, by law, you only have 24 hours to transfer wildlife to a licensed rehabber. The longer babies sit in boxes being fed random things from the internet, handled constantly, stressed, dehydrated, or kept around pets and children, the worse their chances become. The top causes of death we see are cats and finders. That is the reality.
Rehab season has us elbows deep in feedings, meds, wound care, tubing, cleaning cages, laundry, breathing treatments, being bit and scratched, sleepless nights, and trying to place animals when everyone is overloaded. We cannot have volunteers around wildlife unless they hold the proper permits, so unfortunately there is not much βextra helpβ coming in either. We do not have hours to spend arguing over why a squirrel should not have cowβs milk, why a bunny should not be kept (Google capture myopathy) because someone got attached overnight, or being cussed at and called names for trying to help. What in the Sam hell?
When you hand wildlife over to a rehabber, consider donating toward their care if you are able. Formula, syringes, heating pads, meds, gas, cages, laundry detergent, supplies, and food all come out of our own pockets. The majority of us are not paid to do this. We are volunteering our homes, time, sleep, money, sanity, and entire lives during baby season trying to save them.
If you truly want to help wildlife, and it is free: HEAT.KEEP SAFE AND QUIET.CONTACT A LICENSED REHABBER.BE PATIENT.LISTEN TO THEIR INSTRUCTIONS.TRANSPORT.
That is all.
