🙏 FAITHFUL FRIDAY
IN LIGHT OF ETERNITY: NURSING WITH PURPOSE
🩺 What kind of nurse are we becoming—not just professionally, but spiritually?
In her article “In Light of Eternity,” Patti Ozzello shares a deeply personal experience from her early nursing career. While learning new clinical skills and adjusting to the responsibilities of being a registered nurse, she encounters a dying patient who is afraid of death.
The experience leaves her with a question that goes beyond clinical competence: How can she live out her Christian faith in everyday nursing practice?
Her reflection reminds us that nursing involves more than mastering procedures, passing examinations, or earning professional credentials. It also challenges us to consider the kind of presence we bring to the bedside.
💙 AS NURSING PROFESSIONALS, WE CAN:
🔹 Pursue clinical excellence while remaining compassionate.
🔹 Recognize the emotional and spiritual concerns that may accompany illness.
🔹 Be present with patients during moments of uncertainty, suffering, and loss.
🔹 Respect each patient's beliefs, values, choices, and spiritual preferences.
🔹 Allow our faith to shape our integrity, humility, and love for others.
✝️ A SCRIPTURE TO REFLECT ON
“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters.”
— Colossians 3:23 (NIV)
Our faith does not replace our professional responsibilities. Rather, it can inspire us to fulfill them with greater purpose, compassion, and integrity.
When a patient faces suffering or the end of life, we may not have all the answers. But we can listen, offer compassionate presence, respect the patient's wishes, and support the spiritual care the patient desires.
🌿 A QUESTION FOR YOUR HEART:
If someone observed the way you practice nursing, would they see the values you profess to believe?
May we continue developing the knowledge, clinical judgment, and compassionate hearts needed to serve faithfully—one patient, one encounter, and one day at a time.
