Juneteenth, celebrated annually on June 19, is the name given to Emancipation Day by African Americans in Texas. On that day in 1865 Union Major-General Gordon Granger read General Order No. 3 to the people of Galveston. It stated:
"The people of Texas are informed that, in accordance with a proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free..."

Juneteenth is a nationally recognized holiday to honor the final group of 250k enslaved people entering Texas and their eventual emancipation by the US Army. As a way to acknowledge and honor the generations affected by enslavement Juneteenth was recently mandated as a celebratory holiday in 2021.
