As 1of 3 remaining “Freedman” towns in Texas, Joppee is ripe with history and is still considered on

The historic Joppee neighborhood of Dallas is tucked away near the banks of the Trinity River, and at the edge of the Great Trinity Forest in southeast Dallas. As one of the few remaining “Freedman” towns in the nation, the Joppee community is ripe with history. It is believed that the community’s name originates from a biblical reference and translates to “beautiful” or “the beginning” in Hebrew.

What an incredible way to celebrate the end of the school year!

A huge THANK YOU to everyone who came out and made this event so special. The foam party was a huge hit and helped keep everyone cool while having fun in the sun!

A special thank you to Ms. Kim and Joppy Momma's Farm for providing such an amazing hands-on experience. From harvesting cucumbers, tomatoes, and blackberries to collecting fresh eggs from the coop, there was something exciting around every corner. The sunflowers, purple potatoes, and all the learning opportunities made for a truly memorable day.

We are also grateful for the Joppy Book Stop, donated by Dallas Area Habitat for Humanity. This wonderful community project encourages everyone to take a book, read it, and return it so others can enjoy it too.

Thank you to Dallas Police Department- South Central and all of the volunteers whose hard work and dedication made this event possible. Your time, energy, and support helped create a day filled with fun, learning, and fellowship.

And we certainly can't forget our friends at TAMKO Building Products. Thank you not only for sponsoring this event but also for showing up, serving alongside us, and sharing in the fellowship. Your support means so much to our community.

Today was a great day, and we are thankful for everyone who helped make it happen. Here's to a wonderful summer ahead; congratulations to all of the graduates as well!

I need to correct the narrative that the Tenth St. Historic District was the “last intact Freedman’s Town.” That is simply not true.

Joppa-Joppee is one of only THREE remaining intact Freedmen’s Towns in America and unlike the narratives of disappearance, Joppa-Joppee is still here, still standing, and still thriving.

I’m sharing this clip to educate people on a history that is too often ignored, omitted, or erased. It is vitally important that we know and protect our history because the first step toward eradicating a community is pretending it never existed.

Just like what has happened with Tenth Street, there are ongoing attempts to erase Joppa-Joppee through omission; by not acknowledging our history, our legacy, or even our existence.

That is why I remain forever grateful to the late Honorable Carolyn Davis and the staffers who worked alongside us in 2014 to establish Joppa-Joppee as a historic site officially recognized by the Texas Historical Commission.

Our history matters.
Joppa- Joppee matters.
And we will continue making sure our story is told.
