IMO STATE LAUNCHES CERVICAL CANCER SCREENING PROGRAMME — DOF SUPPORTS AND HONORS INVITATION
In a major step to reduce cervical cancer among women, the Imo State Government, in collaboration with (PECCIN) Partnership for Cervical Cancer Elimination in Nigeria and the National Taskforce on Cervical Cancer Elimination (NTF-CCE), officially launched the state’s Cervical Cancer Screening Programme.
The event, held at Sam Mbakwe Hall, Rockview Hotel, Owerri, brought together key government leaders, health experts, and partners. The David Omenukor Foundation (DOF) supports this life-saving initiative and proudly honors the invitation to join the collective fight against cervical cancer.
The programme focuses on expanding access to screening, encouraging early detection, and strengthening healthcare response. Leaders emphasized that cervical cancer is preventable and highly treatable when detected early.
Notable dignitaries included the Executive Governor of Imo State, His Excellency Dist. Sen. Hope Uzodinma, Her Excellency Barr. Chioma Uzodinma - Chiarperson FLAC, Hon. Minister of State for Health Dr. Iziaq Adekunle Salako, Hon. Commissioner for health Imo State Dr. Chioma Vivian Egu, Chiarman National Taskforce on Cervical Cancer Elimination Prof Isaac F. Adewole, Co-chair, NTF-CCE & President-Elect, UICC Her Excellency Zainab Shinkafi-Bagudu, Director General/CEO, NICRAT Prof. Usman Malami Aliyu, NCS President Prof Abidemi Omonisi ably represented by NCS Chiarman Imo State Dr. Okechukwu Duru among others.
With support from partners such as the World Health Organization, Union for International Cancer Control, Clinton Health Access Initiative, and Roche, the initiative aims to improve early diagnosis and reduce cervical cancer deaths across the state.
The official flag-off marks a strong step toward eliminating cervical cancer in Nigeria, with women encouraged to access screening services and promote awareness within their communities.
DOF remains committed to supporting cancer awareness, screening, and community health education across Imo State and beyond.

Breaking the Silence on Colorectal Cancer
Healthy lifestyles, regular screenings, awareness creation, and education have been identified as indispensable strategies in the crusade against colorectal cancer.
This was the consensus by more than 150 participants at the Blue Hat Bow Tie Colorectal Cancer Awareness Workshop organized on Tuesday March 24th, 2026 by David Omenukor Foundation in collaboration with the Nigerian Cancer Society ( Imo State Chapter) and the Global Colon Cancer Association at Golden Vista Hotels, Owerri, Imo State, Nigeria.
In a goodwill address at the event, the Imo State First Lady Barrister Chioma Uzodimma represented by the Hon. Commissioner for Health, Imo State Dr. Chioma Egu emphasized the importance of early detection through regular screenings and urged the participants to pay attention to early warning signs such as persistent changes in bowel movements blood in the stool unexplained discomfort and constant fatigue.
Her Excellency Barrister Uzodimma commended David Omenukor Foundation for putting together such a life-saving program. Three experts/professionals presented papers on various ways to avoid the cancer scourge, The keynote speaker Dr. Chinonso Ekwunife spoke on breaking the silence on colorectal cancer while guest speakers Dr. Ijeoma Dozie focused on food as medicine in reducing cancer burden and Professor Rev Sr Evangeline Oparaocha stressed on the importance of disease screening in Nigeria the truth, the myth and the way forward earlier in her opening address, the Founder and CEO of David Omenukor Foundation (DOF) Dr Keyna Osondu Omenukor described the workshop as a platform for collaboration, education and promoting early detection and encourge conversation on the various ways to combat the cancer scourge. She said that the workshop is also intended to equip health practitioners and the public with life-saving information.
The Commissioner for Tertiary and Technical Education Dr. Victor Nwachukwu pledged to make available the information and knowledge from the workshop to the large population of youths in our tertiary institutions for the benefits of the larger society.
The chairman of the Nigerian cancer society, Imo State Dr Okechukwu Duru, and different other support groups sent goodwill messages to the event.
