On March 24, 1829, one of the most important figures in Mexican history was born in Bahía del Espíritu Santo, near present-day Goliad, Texas. His name was Ignacio Seguín Zaragoza. At the time, Texas was still part of Mexico, and nobody could have guessed that this child born on the Texas frontier would later command one of the most famous victories in Mexican history.
Zaragoza grew up during years of enormous political change. His family later moved deeper into Mexico, where he entered public life and eventually became a military leader. In 1862, he led Mexican forces at the Battle of Puebla, where they defeated a much larger French army. That victory became the reason people still celebrate Cinco de Mayo today.
What makes the story especially striking for Texas history is this: the hero most closely tied to Cinco de Mayo was born on Texas soil, long before Texas became a U.S. state. It is a reminder that Texas history did not begin in 1836 or 1845. It reaches further back, and it connects to much more than one nation.

Grand Prairie High School’s Boys 🏀 team is this year’s District Champions, and they are preparing for the Bi-District Round of 6A D2 playoffs. This Tuesday, February 24, at W.T. White High School in Dallas, The Mighty Gophers will hit the hardwood against Richardson Pearce High School. The game is scheduled to tip at 7:00 p.m. The GPHSGophers have worked hard all year and look to continue their great play in the playoffs.

As a former wrestler for Grand Prairie High I am extremely happy and proud that GP High finally has the first State Champion in the 124 yr school history. Congrats Jacob Ramirez! 💪🏾🤎
