At 7:49 pm the Elmo Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched to a truck fire along westbound I-20 at the FM 429 exit. Because of reports of heavy fire from an 18 wheeler immediate mutual aid was requested from the College Mound Volunteer Fire Department.

Crews arrived to the cab of the 18 wheeler fully engulfed and fire in about 1/3 of the trailer. The driver had just fueled the rig with 200 gallons of diesel. The fire had melted some of the fuel tanks and burning diesel was pouring from the rig.

Firefighters attacked the burning cab as others breached the sides of the trailer to reach the spreading fire. The rig was loaded with 44,000 lbs of solar panels.

It took firefighters about an hour to completely extinguish the blaze.

The driver had stopped and fueled about 30 minutes earlier. As he drove he heard a loud pop, saw smoke. When he got out the bottom of the cab was on fire. The Kaufman County Fire Marshall's office responded and will work to determine a cause. There were no reported injuries.

Tuesday night your College Mound firefighters came together to train. The training was roof ventilation.

While it may sound simple to use a chainsaw to cut a hole in the roof of a home it can get complicated. First you're wearing protective gear including breathing apparatus. That adds about 40 lbs to carry. Next you're carrying a chain saw. Your partner is carrying an axe or pike pole. You're working at height and of course there a fire burning under you!

A primary ladder to the roof is set with a second ladder designed to hook over the ridgeline to provide secure footing. A second ladder to the roof is also set to provide an alternate way to escape in case of roof collapse. Your partner sounds the roof by striking it with the axe or pike pole. This is to detect weak spots that could be a collapse hazard. Then a hole is cut using the chainsaw.

The purpose of venting the roof is to allow a controlled point for fire and smoke to exit. This rapidly clears the attic of heavy smoke allowing firefighters inside the home to see and extinguish the fire.

College Mound firefighters meet regularly and train on a variety of firefighting and rescue tactics as well as medical care. We are always looking for people that are interested in serving their community. If you're interested please reach out.

We asked many kids (and adults) this weekend to finish this sentence "When I grow up I want to be a ... "

The future looks bright here in College Mound and we wish all the kids and their parents/caretakers a wonderful school year 🤓

The sad reality is the number of volunteers serving departments all throughout the United States has dropped substantially over the past decade meanwhile calls continue to increase due to increased growth amongst other factors.

We invite anyone interested in Volunteering to come out tonight to our meeting. There are many ways to serve this Community that does not necessarily involve fighting fires and/or medical calls. We also very much appreciate Cooks, Administrators, Community Event Coordinators, etc.

We strongly encourage if you have any students interested in the field that are 17 years or older to join. Surround yourself with like minded people and gain beneficial knowledge and experience. We'll help set you up for success because the world needs more Firefighters.

Would you help us by sharing this post, Thank you 🚒
