We will always remember Sergeant Gregory L. Hunter – End of Watch: June 18, 2004
A message from wife and daughter of Sergeant Gregory L. Hunter -
Today, we remember 30-year veteran, Sergeant Gregory L. Hunter, End of Watch: Friday, June 18, 2004.
Sgt. Hunter was ambushed and murdered by an armed fugitive while investigating a suspicious vehicle with another officer at a local Walmart. The suspect was eventually killed by the other officer.
Sgt. Hunter was the first African American officer hired by the city, commissioned by TCLEOSE. Sgt. Hunter loved being on the street with his officers. He believed that police work was not just a job, but an honorable and noble calling. He served as a mentor to many and was a friend to all. Sgt. Hunter was very respected by all who knew him. He was recognized by his peers and supervisors for the professionalism and commitment he demonstrated to his chosen profession with many awards and honors.
“We both know Greg would not have chosen to leave us, but we know he was aware that his job had a tangible element of danger that cowered and deferred lesser men. Greg realized and respected that danger but never feared it. He protected his family and that of everyone else. He was very much a soldier doing a soldier’s duty. His uniform may have been blue, not khaki, but his commitment and aim were exactly the same. All of mankind inevitably dies. Greg died a hero’s death doing a job he knew was important. It has often been said that a man is measured by what he leaves behind, and that it is up to history to evaluate his contributions. We know that Greg has left a legacy built upon the fruits of the spirit.
Greg lived his life as a humble, spiritual and honorable man. He is remembered as a faithful husband and devoted father. He not only blessed our daughter and me with his laughter, his happiness and positive nature, he also blessed the lives of others. Most importantly, he will be remembered for his kindness and his sincere love for the Lord. Greg leaves a legacy of honor, nobility and integrity. He believed his greatest honor was in serving the Lord. His life was his testimony.”
