Highland Meadows Preservation
Established in 1959, Barkley Square was developed by Frank H Malone with homes built by Leland G Lee Jr and Lee Construction Company.
Homes in Barkley Square were offered in thirty different designs in period architecture of Mid-Century Ranch and Early American Ranch. Homes were advertised as the "House of Ease" and were built including over twenty revolutionary building products by Reynolds Metals Company. Homes were three bedroom, two bath, family room, completely furnished kitchen, two car garage, fireplace, air conditioning with a General Electric heat pump and insulation with Owens Corning fiberglass... All for the starting price of $20,000.
The Ranch-Style house is a uniquely American style of architecture, it began in the 1930's in Los Angeles and quickly spread across the country. At the end of World War II, war veterans who had been offered generous home loans returned home, ready to resume their lives and raise families. However, scarcity during the Great Depression and the war led to few houses being built and a pent-up demand. "While architects in Western Europe and the Soviet Union met the need by building high-rise apartment blocks, Americans created a consumer product that people wanted to buy, and that was the Ranch-Style house." Alan Hess, architectural historian.

Highland Meadows Neighborhood Association's Yard of the Month recognizes outstanding homes and the neighbors who do a superior job maintaining their yards in a way that enhances the overall appeal of our entire community.
Herb and Pat Linder were on their way to Churches Fried Chicken on a Sunday in 1971, when they passed by a handful of homes under construction in the newly developed Caribbean Estates section of our neighborhood. Pat encouraged her husband to stop and take a look, and later that day they contacted the designer and builder James A Loven. Soon thereafter they were moving into their new home with their newborn son.
Pat has always had a passion for for gardening and has been awarded HMNA's Yard of the Month twice before, to say she has a "green thumb" is an understatement. She is a skilled gardener with a gift for making things grow. Over the years and with countless hours of planning and hard work, Pat has created a comfortable country garden...

Thank you to everyone who joined our first Highland Meadows Neighborhood Bio Blitz led by our neighborhood Master Naturalists Evo Lineberry and Connie Koval! It was wonderful to experience nature in one of our neighborhood conservation areas and share time with our community.
Our small but intrepid group were able to identify 28 different species in an hour and a half! We learned about various types of wildflowers and insects in McCree Annex Park, spotted a few rabbits, and observed Red Tailed Hawks and Mississippi Kites hunting for prey. All of our observation data was recorded and shared with conservation experts.
We look forward to hosting our next Bio Blitz in the Fall!
