Planning for a Disaster

Yippee – it’s springtime in Texas – grass is greening, trees are leafing, flowers are blooming. But wait – that means the “uglies” are also here. You know, the “uglies”: severe thunderstorms, hail, flooding and - yes - tornadoes. All will occur some places so let’s take a few minutes to think about “what if” and what comes after them.

So “what if” a tornado hit the subdivision next to yours and damaged the natural gas lines, with leaks everywhere. Law enforcement is driving up and down your street blaring notification that your subdivision must be evacuated until the gas leaks can be contained – and could be several hours or days. You start with what do you need for your two legged family members.

Then move onto what about your four legged family members:

1. Definitely need your information on a sheet of paper including contacts like relatives and friends with names and phone numbers.

2. Description of each of your animals and photos of your animals, from the side and face. Need names of each on the photos. But you think these are already in my phone. What if you lose your phone’s charge or the cell tower is damaged? Plan to have a photo of your animals. Also provide specific info such intact or neutered, frightens easily, etc. for each of your animals.

3. Ask your veterinarian to provide you with a copy of the invoice for each of your animals’ immunizations, particularly rabies. The invoice should the name, address and phone number of the vet’s office.

4. Make sure they have collars with ID tag and vet’s rabies tag attached, plus leashes. Should also have extra collar and leash just in case its needed.

5, Gather all medications for your animals, clearly labeled with name of patient, dosage and instructions for use. Put into a container with a covered top.

6. Microchip information is the best way to confirm ownership so keep a copy of the form which shows the microchip number. By all means have your animals microchipped!!!

7. Food and water: Make a note for each animal on name of manufacturer, specific food each eats and daily amount.. Purina or Royal Canin is just not enough information – list the specific food such as Purina Pro Plan or Royal Canin Urinary UC. Keep several bottles of water in the pantry just in case.

8. Favorite toy of each animal and maybe a small blanket or towel to remind them of home.

All of the paper items can be bundled, rolled and then placed into a section of P*P pipe which can be obtained at any home improvement store such as ACE, Home Depot or Lowe’s. Purchase about 12" of pipe (a rolled letter size piece of paper will fit) and two end caps. Put piece of masking tape on it and identify what this is.

Now back to reality. All of these items can be prepared way ahead of a disaster, put into a box and just placed in a corner or a closet until the turbulent spring weather is over and summer heat arrives.

The Membership of Texas Kennel Club are saying prayers for all those who were impacted in the April 2024 tornadoes in Texas and Oklahoma.
