But at least he sent me a Christmas card — sorry, holiday card — showing his beautiful family at White Rock Lake, which I’m sure he knows needs to be dredged. That’s really sweet.”
But, yo, then I saw that the return address was the P.O. box of his mayoral campaign. “This ain’t no Christmas card — sorry, holiday card,” I thought. “This is a dang campaign mailer.”
Once again, you win, Mayor Eric Johnson, Esq. Well played.

See If We Can Guess Why the Mayor Wants to Keep His Schedule Secret
See If We Can Guess Why the Mayor Wants to Keep His Schedule Secret
I learned this week in a piece by Shawn Shinneman at D Magazine that the city of Dallas is paying lawyers to sue the Texas Attorney General in district court in Austin to get out of turning over Mayor Eric Johnson’s daily calendar. Let me just run that by you...

As If in Camelot, Dallas Mayor Johnson Orders an End to Murder
Wow, he thinks he’s the one exercising patience? Somebody needs to tell him. The whole city has been exercising extreme patience, along with fear, anger, frustration and confusion. The highest murder rate in a dozen years tends to do that.
“I have not heard anyone articulate a concrete plan to reduce violent crime in our city by a particular amount and by a certain time,” he says in his letter.
Yes, well, Mr. Mayor, that’s the sort of thing most of us were hoping we might hear from you. You know. As mayor?

So the mayor has changed his mind. After ducking crime and a soaring murder rate in his election campaign last summer, after handing it all off to a study commission when he got elected, now all of a sudden Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson sees a murder crisis in the city...

Here’s a hypothetical for you. Let’s say you’re the recently elected mayor of the ninth-largest city in the United States. You’ve got a pair of custom Luccheses that you acquired nearly a decade ago. They don’t fit quite right. Do you:

Last week, we got a taste of the problems that Mayor Eric Johnson’s side hustle can cause. When he was named a partner at the law firm Locke Lord, he said he had quit his old firm because it had a direct conflict of interest with the city. He said, “Today I joined one that does not.” Then, eight days after saying that, Mayor Johnson, Esq. had to recuse himself from a closed-door executive session with the Dallas City Council because the conversation involved a federal lawsuit over control of gates at Love Field, and, as it turns out, Locke Lord represents American Airlines.
So where might the next conflict arise?

Technical Conflicts of Interest Are Not the Mayor’s Problem. It’s the Oath.
Technical Conflicts of Interest Are Not the Mayor’s Problem. It’s the Oath.
As you know, shortly after Eric Johnson took a job as mayor of Dallas, he took another job as an attorney with the Locke Lord law firm. He said he could do both jobs at the same time, no problem, and that he would keep a sharp eye out for...

As a public finance attorney, Johnson deals with bonds, Norimine says. That’s important because cities often issue bonds to pay for infrastructure projects and other things. And a lawyer like Johnson could help a city facilitate the issuing of those bonds. But Norimine says Locke Lord has assured the public that it’s prepared to prevent conflicts of interest.
“Locke Lord representatives have said that they have an entire staff dedicated to ensuring a firewall between all their partners and their conflicts of interest, and have taken extra steps to make that wall even stronger with Mayor Johnson,” Norimine says.
She says the other concern is whether Johnson will be able to handle both roles effectively.

Locke Lord, the firm that hired Mayor Eric Johnson, said it has a firewall to protect all of its partners from conflicts of interest – especially the mayor.
