Through all the pain of the past two days, I was grateful to find some joy yesterday with friends and dedicated advocates at Dallas City Hall, for the annual raising of the Pride Flag! 🌈

Thank you, dallasdemocrats, for inviting me to join tonight’s vigil at W.H. Adamson High School, here in HD 104.
Oak Cliff is special because of our people. Our community’s warmth, hospitality, and shared spirit are unique because people like Sylvia Collins and Marisol Perez set their roots here.
I can still hear Sylvia Collins say: “Señorita cómo estás, cuídate!” She would always check up on me, even when I didn't think I needed it. We were lucky to have Sylvia in our lives and organizing towards a better, safer, stronger Texas.
Marisol Perez died while protecting her beloved 18 month old son, Erik. They were taken from family members who loved them deeply. Right now, their family is in shock. Our Oak Cliff community needs to step up and ensure that they have what they need, especially love.
Tonight, the sun sets over Oak Cliff. While we grieve those we have lost, while we recover from the shock of the past two days, we must commit to be here for our neighbors. Many hard days lie ahead for those impacted by this tragedy. It's up to all of us to help them get back on their feet.

Muchos de nosotros, los Demócratas de Dallas, le debemos muchísimo a Sylvia Collins. Ella es una gigante en nuestra comunidad: una mentora, una fuerza motivadora e inspiradora para el bien, una líder, una vecina, mi constituyente y mi amiga.
Sin la fe de Sylvia en nuestros valores compartidos y en nuestra gente, nuestro movimiento sería menos grande, más frío y más débil de lo que es. Sin su calidez y su espíritu vecinal, su amado hogar de Oak Cliff no sería el faro de esperanza vibrante y acogedor que ha sido durante generaciones. Sin el aliento y la generosidad de Sylvia —sin todos esos paquetes de material de campaña que repartimos juntos hace ya más de ocho años—, yo no sería su Representante Estatal.
Al igual que ustedes, confío en que Sylvia sea encontrada sana y salva, lista para unirse a nosotros en la lucha de nuestra comunidad por la justicia para las víctimas de la tragedia de ayer. Debemos creer en ella tal como ella cree en todos nosotros. No perderemos la esperanza.

So many of us Dallas Democrats owe too much to Sylvia Collins. She is a giant in our community - a mentor, a motivating and inspiring force for good, a leader, a neighbor, my constituent, and my friend.
Without Sylvia’s belief in our shared values, and in our people, our movement would be lesser, colder, and weaker than it is. Without her warmth and neighborly spirit, her beloved home of Oak Cliff wouldn't be the vibrant, welcoming beacon of hope that it has been for generations. Without Sylvia’s encouragement and generosity, without all those packets of turf we knocked together over eight years ago, I wouldn't be her State Representative.
Like you, I hope that Sylvia will be found, unscathed and unharmed, and ready to join us in our community’s fight for justice for the victims of yesterday’s tragedy. We must believe in her just like she believes in all of us. We won't lose hope.
