We are sharing a Fund Balance Report for the General Fund based on financial information provided by the Village of Dansville. For simplicity, we have rounded figures to the nearest $1,000.
The General Fund covers most Village expenses other than water and sewer. For example, highway maintenance, fire protection, ambulance services, and police are included in the General Fund. Each fund (General, Water, and Sewer) has a fund balance, which, for all practical purposes, functions like a savings account.
Why is this important?
From this fund balance, we must subtract money committed for specific purposes by the Board, additional unplanned expenditures during the current budget year, and a correction for a budgeting error involving $150,000 in overstated CHIPS revenue.
What remains is our financial safety net. And what remains in the General Fund is $80,000!
Despite at least one trustee believing the General Fund savings account is solvent enough to allow the Village to take on additional debt, the bottom line balance of $80,000 says otherwise.
By the end of 2027, our next firetruck is expected to arrive with a price tag of $1,245,736. And to date, the Village Board has neither set aside funds in its current budget nor put forth a plan to pay for it.
For the past four months, members of DCFGG have raised concerns about the actual condition of the General Fund balance, especially the $150,000 CHIPS budgeting error. The Board seems unconcerned.
