What does it really mean to age well?

As part of Older Americans Month, President & CEO Randy Colman spoke with LaVonda Gary, MS, Case Manager of our Silver Care Program, about some of the biggest challenges older adults face today, from navigating healthcare systems to aging alone without strong support networks.

The conversation also explores healthy aging, caregiving, advocacy and what younger generations should be thinking about now to better prepare for the future.

Just days before becoming homeless, 82-year-old Yvan reached out to us with nowhere left to turn.

After a devastating series of events changed his life, he suddenly found himself without stable housing or financial security. By Friday, he was sitting in our office trying to figure out where he would sleep next. That same weekend, he had to pay for a motel room just to get through the next few nights safely.

On Monday morning, we viewed an apartment together. By Monday afternoon, Yvan signed the lease.

Goodman JFS helped cover the move-in costs so he could secure housing immediately. A landlord was willing to move forward based on a commitment letter from our agency while our check processing team was away, something that helped prevent additional delays at a critical moment.

When Yvan moved in, the apartment wasn’t empty for long.

Sheets, blankets, pillows, plates, food and other household basics helped turn the space into something functional and livable right away. Community partners also stepped in with furniture and additional essentials so he could settle in without having to start from scratch.

A few days later, Yvan sent us a letter that included this line: “You didn’t just provide a service; you saved a human soul.”

From a motel room to a furnished apartment, this transformation was a reminder of what can happen when the right support comes together at the right time. 💙
