Committed to the community; committed to our pets

Best of luck to our community as the new Director begins today. I will not be checking this page much from now on, so if you need me, please message my personal page.

It's been a pleasure getting to know more of you in this amazing community of animal lovers!

I'm going to leave this page here for now, as my commitment to our community and our pets is as strong as ever, and should the community ever want me to consider this position again, I am open to it in the future.

I have received several messages regarding news that Broward County may have already hired a new shelter director.

Here is what I know:

1. To my knowledge, no formal announcement has been made regarding a new director.

2. I have heard several first-hand accounts from people who were physically at the shelter last Tuesday when a man was touring the shelter as "the person hired to be the new director."

3. To my knowledge, the job has not been posted or opened (and I've been watching the county site, recruiter sites, and sheltering organization listings).

4. I sent my application materials and several follow-up emails to county administrators and the recruitment agency but have received no response.

I remain interested in serving this community and dedicated to our pets.

That said, I hope whoever takes over the position of Director this time is truly committed to improving the quality of life and outcomes for our pets, invested in developing strong networks with our county's municipalities, and is responsive to the needs of our community. We have so many fantastic volunteers, rescues, caregivers, and untapped resources to help improve the lives of our pets -- working together and building strong coalitions should be a priority.

As always, if anyone needs me, you know where to find me! I'm not giving up until an announcement is made. And if a new director is announced, then I wish them all the best, and I'll still be here, working in this community, and ready to apply again should the need arise. I've been helping Broward shelter pets since 2007, and I understand the pattern. I hope this time, we shift toward healing.

Thank you to everyone for your kind words, many questions, and engaging discussions. I appreciate your commitment, and I look forward to working with you no matter what the future holds.

I received a call today about this wee kitten who needed urgent medical care. I'm happy to share that No Paw Left Behind has funds right now for community cats in need of vet care! This little guy, Sebastian, had a much-needed vet visit and is now hopefully on the mend. Thank you for reaching out, Susan ❀

It's amazing what we can do when we work together 🐾

I hope everyone is having a beautiful weekend and happy holidays to everyone who is celebrating.

I wanted to share this beautiful message I just received from Harriet Fleischman Sklar

Some days it feels like the work ahead of us is overwhelming, then moments like this happen and I’m filled with gratitude. Thank you, Harriet!

β€œTo whom it may Concern,
I , Harriet Sklar, volunteered at MDAS for many years
I worked under the direction of Jacqueline Johnson.
When I entered the program all I knew was that I loved dogs. However, Jackie , as I called her taught me so much about them.
She taught me :
how to recognize a dogs mood
how to properly walk a dog - as it can be different for breeds and sizes.
She taught me the different personalities a dog can have
She taught me how to enter a cage without scaring the dog.
She taught me how to offer treats without getting bit.
She taught me dogs are not mean- people make them mean.
She showed me how to calm that nervous dog and get him: her to trust you. Under Jackie’s guidance I became the lead volunteer.
My love for dogs and I mean all dogs and breeds increased and I even began to love cats. This was because of Jackie- her love of her job- her patience and kindness.
Dr. Jacquelyn Johnston deserves the job of Broward County Animal Care Director. She’d be fantastic and the staff and animals would greatly benefit.
Sincerely,
Harriet A Sklar

Good luck Jackie I’m rooting for you”
