Enslaved Texans didn't learn they were free until 2+ years after the Emancipation Proclamation, because those in power simply chose not to tell them. Freedom only came when it was enforced.

That lesson hits differently in 2026, as the Supreme Court's recent ruling in Louisiana v. Callais guts a key provision of the Voting Rights Act — and red states are already moving to redraw district maps to dilute minority voting power.

The tactics change. The goal doesn't.

Juneteenth is a day to honor those who fought for freedom — and a reminder that democracy only survives when people keep fighting for it.
