A Century-Plus Denver Tradition
It all started back in 1861. Denver was a frontier town -- rough and tumble -- where miners stopped to get supplies. The nearly built railroad brought more and more people who decided to stay longer because of the majestic Rocky Mountains. The city wasn’t known as part of Colorado yet; it was still considered part of Kansas. In fact, the city itself was called Denver City, named after the Kansas governor.
To help bring culture to the bustling Western town, a bugler decided to form a band that played for the public. After all, Denver City wanted to attract families and civilized folks, not just people yearning to strike it rich.
The Denver City Band was born.
Since then, the Denver Municipal Band has been delighting Denver-area audiences for free. Dave Brubeck and other famous musicians have played with us. And we’ve transformed from playing marches and classical to playing Big Band, jazz, show tunes, movie scores, soul, rock, and more. We play festivals, such as the Taste of Ethopia and the Westminster Latino Festival, as well as for policitical conventions (from Teddy Roosevelt to Barak Obama) and city inaugurations. You can find us in a city park near you. The Denver Municipal Band plays throughout the Denver area.
