If you’re able to make it into downtown Derry today, I encourage you to do so! We’re expecting generally dry, partly overcast weather today, while the chance for rain increases tomorrow.

I just want to take a minute to give a big shout out to all of the first responders here in Derry, as well as the firefighters, EMTs, police officers, and everyone else working hard across Westmoreland County following today’s severe storms.

A huge thank you as well to all of the utility crews and workers who are out tonight helping restore power throughout the region.

Tonight was certainly an interesting one! If you don’t have to go out, please try to stay home. There are still trees down, debris scattered across roadways, and cleanup efforts underway in many areas.

Take it easy, stay safe, and take care of yourselves tonight.

A special thank you as well to our teachers, staff, administrators, bus drivers, parents, and everyone else who works hard to support our students throughout the year. 💙💛

Hello, Derry Borough and surrounding communities! ☀️

Today marks the beginning of the Derry Great Garage Sale Days, August 7–8! 🏡🛍️

Whether you’re setting up a sale yourself or heading out to shop, please be mindful of the increased vehicle and pedestrian traffic throughout town.

Please use a little extra caution, particularly along Route 217, and keep an eye out for people crossing or vehicles stopping and turning unexpectedly. We may also have folks passing through who aren’t familiar with the increased activity in town.

Have fun, find some great deals, and most importantly, stay safe! 🙂

As many of you have undoubtedly noticed, a significant amount of wildfire smoke has moved into our area, creating hazy conditions and unhealthy air quality.

The smoke is primarily coming from wildfires burning in southern Ontario, Canada, and northern Minnesota. Although these fires are hundreds of miles away, winds are carrying the smoke into Pennsylvania, including our area in southwestern Pennsylvania. The smoke is expected to remain in the region through Friday.

As of this afternoon, local Air Quality Index readings have reached approximately 206, driven primarily by PM2.5, or fine particulate matter, in the wildfire smoke. An AQI between 201 and 300 is classified as “Very Unhealthy,” meaning everyone may face an increased risk of health effects.

Please take appropriate precautions, particularly for infants and young children, older adults, pregnant individuals, and those with asthma, COPD, heart disease, or other respiratory or cardiovascular conditions.

While not everyone can remain indoors throughout the day, please limit prolonged or strenuous outdoor activity whenever possible. When outdoor exposure cannot be avoided, consider wearing a properly fitted N95 respirator if one is available.

At home, keep doors and windows closed, set your air conditioning to recirculate, and use an air purifier with a HEPA filter if available. Please also check on family members, friends, and neighbors who may be especially vulnerable.

Take care of yourselves and continue monitoring local air-quality conditions, as readings can change throughout the day.

The Big Boy coming through the Heart of Derry! 🚂

I’ve never seen so many people in our town for a single event, and I have to say that it was great to see plates from all over, incl. New Jersey, Virginia, Florida, and beyond.
