Pictured below: the student share of public university/college tuition.

Iowa students pay one of the highest percentages in the nation—at 63.3%—because our state investment is so low.

This year there is no funding increase for Iowa’s Regent Universities in the Republican Majority budget. That means there will be even more pressure on students and families with even higher tuition costs.

The Majority in the Senate has enshrined in Iowa law one of the particularly cruel federal policies from this administration—taking away food assistance from people who have LEGAL status in our county.

So in the future, if a different administration. or congress decides to reverse this policy, Iowa will continue to refuse federal food assistance to refugees, humanitarian parolees like the brave people who assisted our military in Afghanistan and sought refuge in our country, and victims of human trafficking.

The one good change in this amended bill—The majority is no longer trying to put privatized Medicaid into Iowa law in advance of a new governor.
