The role of a notary is to help prevent fraud. Identification is key. If you are not personally know by the notary or can not be identified by someone the notary knows, you will need the following identification:

💙 valid drivers license
💙 official non-driver’s ID
💙 US military ID
💙 permanent residence/“green card” issued by the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS)

Copies of these documents are not acceptable. No birth certificates. No Social Security cards.

How to file a PPO-Personal Protection Order 💙 Share this! Someone may need it.

Gather any proof of unwanted contact.

Call your local precinct and ask for the domestic violence advocate. (Your situation doesn’t have to be violent...it can be stalking.)

File your description of key events while indicating your concerns for your safety.

Allow the advocate to send off your papers. They will contact you when the results come back.

If the paperwork is accepted, it’s time for court.

You must be prepared to file court dates. There is little wiggle room, so wiggle; get a date that works best for you. In Detroit, administration and determination of the PPO happen in the Coleman A Young Municipal bldg.

You must also serve the offender paperwork and get papers notarized. Serving can cost between $17-$27 depending on the method. Notary services are free at some banks but can cost from $10-20.

I will notarize your papers regarding PPOs for free for the month of January (travel fee not included). If you need your papers served, we offer that as well.

There may be other ways to do this, but this one gives the most support and best results, from what I’ve seen. Your concerns are valid. Stay safe. 💙
