Mentorship moments

The G Society mentorship program takes a big step! We are now partnered with YouthBuild Detroit YouthBuild which is part of the Detroit Housing Commission. It is a program designed to help Opportunity Youth complete high school, obtain nationally recognized credentials, and obtain career skills and acquire permanent employment.

The way I’m choosing mentors for this project is by breaking down the mentees interest form and pairing them with someone who I think is a good fit. I may reach out to some of my Detroit folks to see if you want to be a part of this and feel free to reach out to me if you’re interested in mentoring.

It means a lot to be able to continue working with Detroit youth while living in Chicago. I couldn’t be doing it without the help of my team members Tiffany and Chris. This is my 15th year providing exposure, education and opportunity to kids in Detroit. I intend to keep that streak going. Live the mission and the work becomes effortless

We had our first mentor mentee meetup! Our mentor Chris is a coach at U of D High School and took Michael over to the outdoor courts for some Saturday afternoon hoops. Michael is really pumped, he just passed his GED ready test, makin moves, planning the next step. If you want to sign up to be a mentor or know any young Detroiters who might be interested in some activities around art, music and wellness, fill out the form in the comments. This program requires minimal time, the structure is simple, but will hopefully leave a lasting footprint.

When I was a kid I didn’t have to worry about my next meal or how I was getting around or having clothes and art supplies. Because of that, my imagination and creativity had space to grow. Creativity and freedom to express are privileges. I won’t forget that, and I’m working to expand that privilege to broader groups in Detroit with The G Society

Our first mentee mentor hangout is Saturday. A former college basketball player and coach at u of d is going to go hoop with a young Detroiter. It’s the little things.
