Those iconic five-globe post top lights along Washington Boulevard aren’t just decorative—they’re a glimpse into Detroit’s history ‼️

They were part of Detroit’s 1900s, ‘City Beautiful Movement’—a movement that created attractive public spaces through architecture, landscaping, and decorative lighting. The hope was to encourage people to take pride in their community through thoughtful urban design.

More than a century later, these historic-style fixtures continue to help define one of Downtown Detroit’s most recognizable corridors. ✨

PLA uses a variety of streetlight poles throughout Detroit, including streetscape poles. These poles feature both a roadway light for drivers and a pedestrian light that helps illuminate the sidewalk.

PLA provides resources and a request form for organizations and individuals seeking street lighting modifications at non-governmental expense. Applicants must follow the required approval and payment process before work can begin‼️
