The future has always been in the hands of the youth, and as we continue working on the the 375 Project, we took the opportunity to hear their voices and how they will feel in the new space. From seating to stop and breathe, connect, and learn & remember, we look forward to more voices shaping the future of Detroit
Community members and descendants of Black Bottom and Paradise Valley reflect on the history, resilience, and lasting impact of these neighborhoods.
Their stories offer powerful insight into the past—and why preserving this history matters today, especially as the 375 Project continues to evolve.

Last Thursday evening at the Eastern on Russell St., MDOT hosted more than 200 people in-person and by live-stream at the 375 project’s 13th community meeting. Since the 375 Project resumed in November 2025, the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) has worked with various project partners and community stakeholders to conduct a series of engagements focused on history, arts, culture, urban design and community-driven strategies. Meeting participants learned what MDOT heard during these conversations and what is happening with the project now. The first part of the meeting highlighted project partners and the work done to listen and engage the community in conversations about equitable development, lifting up the history of neighborhoods in the 375 footprint and suggested strategies for excess land and adjacent neighborhoods. More than 100 community members provided feedback and shared their perspective on community enhancement elements of the project, including Housing, Health and Wellness, Workforce Development and Small Businesses in the area. The open house-style meeting featured interactive tables and exhibit boards, kicked off by a brief presentation.

I-375 community open house is next Thursday April 30th 5:30pm at the Eastern, 3434 Russell. Will include "a series of engagements focused on history, arts, culture, urban design and community driven strategies," including new parks. Will be livestreamed.

The next generation is helping shape the 375 Project.
MDOT’s 375 Youth Focus Group has invited young people to the table to talk about how arts, history, and culture show up in the design of the 375 corridor. Their ideas help influence the 375 Project and real changes in our community.
At the first meeting in March here’s what we heard:
-- Music of all types is important to highlight – it’s what put Detroit on the map.
-- People need indoor and outdoor spaces to connect, relax and breathe, and stay informed on the happenings in our community.
-- Placemaking themes such as Learning and Remembering and Engaging matter, because history connects us to one another and to the present and future.
-- Programmable spaces to gather around culture like Eastern Market are important to young people
-- We need community and commercial spaces that honor culture and are accessible to youth and people without cars
Last week the second 375 Youth Focus Group meeting took place at Christ Church on Jefferson Ave., and we talked about ways to use open space that connects the community and different ways that parks contribute to placemaking.
