I was in Cook this morning for the county board meeting. At the Laurentian Divide the maple trees looked spectacular, but everything else is still pretty green.

Twenty-five years ago this morning, I started work at 5 a.m. as a patrol sergeant with the Duluth Police Department. We had just finished roll call and sent the second day shifters out when the news came on and we saw the Twin Towers burning.

Like everyone else, we were trying to make sense of what we were watching. I remember Katie Couric on NBC wondering if there could have been some kind of problem with the planes’ instruments. That’s how unbelievable it was at first. The thought that someone had intentionally flown a plane into those buildings was difficult to comprehend.

What I remember most about the rest of that day was the uncertainty. We didn’t know what was coming next or if there would be more attacks. We prepared the best we could.

Things felt different in the following days. The political fighting seemed to stop. People came together and there was a real appreciation for police officers, firefighters, paramedics, dispatchers and others who put themselves in harm’s way.

9/11 also forced us in law enforcement to take a hard look at how agencies communicated and shared information. There were failures leading up to the attacks, and we learned a lot. Lessons learned that still matter today, although some have forgotten.

Nearly 3,000 people went to work, boarded airplanes or started an ordinary Tuesday morning and never came home. First responders ran into buildings knowing others were running out.

Twenty-five years later, I still remember that morning clearly. We cannot forget those we lost, what we learned, and for a time, how united this country became.

I know I will never forget.

As of 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 6, 2026, the St. Louis County Sheriff's Office has lifted all remaining evacuation zones associated with recent wildfire activity.

Additionally, the Echo Trail road closure will be lifted at 8:00 p.m. on Friday, August 7, 2026, and the roadway will reopen to all public travel.

Although the road is reopening, fire mitigation work will continue. Motorists should expect delays between 9:00 a.m. and 7:30 p.m.due to ongoing operations, and significant delays are possible during those hours.

Travelers using the Echo Trail are encouraged to exercise caution and limit travel unless necessary. Delays related to pilot car escorts and flagging operations should also be expected as crews continue their work along the corridor. Please slow down, obey all traffic control devices, and be prepared for intermittent stops to allow crews to safely complete fire mitigation activities.

While evacuation orders and the road closure have been lifted, the U.S. Forest Service will continue to maintain closures within the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW) in the affected area. Visitors are encouraged to check the U.S. Forest Service website for the latest information on wilderness closures and restrictions before traveling.

St. Louis County thanks residents, visitors, emergency responders, and cooperating agencies for their patience, cooperation, and support throughout this incident.
