Proper medication use, storage & disposal insures we not only keep oursleves safe, but also keeps our kids, pets, friends, and environment safe.

Here are 5 tips for medication use as we age:

1. Know Your Medications
Keep a current list of all your medications, vitamins, and supplements. Share it with your healthcare provider and pharmacist so they can help prevent harmful drug interactions.

2. Take Medications the Right Way
Follow your healthcare provider’s and pharmacist’s instructions carefully. Take the correct dose at the right time each day, and use reminders such as pill boxes, alarms, or notes if needed.

3. Check Expiration Dates
Check your medications often and properly dispose of expired or unused medications. This helps prevent mistakes and keeps your medications organized.

4. Store Medication Safely
Keep medications in a cool, dry place unless they need refridgeration. Store them in a secure location out of reach from children, pets, and vulnerable adults.

5. Dispose of Medications Properly
Do not flush medications down the toliet or sink. Use medication drop off sites, drug take-back programs, or approved at-home disposal options. Visit stlouiscountymn.gov/medwaste for an up to date list of year-round drop boxes located in St. Louis County.
