This afternoon at approximately 3:45 p.m., officers responded to the 12300 block of Ramona Boulevard following a radio call reporting a man waving a sword.

As a precaution, two nearby schools were placed on lockdown while officers responded to the area.

With assistance from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department helicopter, officers were able to quickly locate the subject, who was still armed with a sword. Officers safely took the subject into custody shortly thereafter.

We appreciate the cooperation of our schools, students, staff, and community members while officers worked to safely resolve the incident.

Officers Garcia, Mares, and Rios began their journey as police recruits and successfully graduated from the Rio Hondo Police Academy, Class 219.

Today, we pause to honor and remember Sergeant Michael Domingo Paredes and Officer Joseph Anthony Santana of the El Monte Police Department, who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty on June 14, 2022.

Their courage, dedication, and selfless service to our community will never be forgotten. As we reflect on their legacy, we also remember the families, friends, and fellow officers who continue to carry their memory with them every day.

The City of El Monte stands united in gratitude and remembrance, honoring two heroes whose commitment to protecting others came at the highest cost.

May we never forget their sacrifice, and may their legacy continue to inspire generations to come.
