➡️ Today, TRLA held a press conference to announce a lawsuit against Cross River Bank, who are suing El Paso grandmother and retiree Lorena Vargas for over $100,000 for solar panels that are not on her home and she did not ask for.

🔅 Typically, a solar panel scam involves a door-to-door salesman that pressures homeowners into signing a contract, promising impossible savings and tax credits.

This didn't happen with Ms. Vargas. She never spoke to a salesperson. She never saw or signed a contract. Instead, she was served a lawsuit for a debt she did not owe, sending her into a panic about how she could afford a lawsuit.

Thankfully, Ms. Vargas reached out to Legal Aid.

Today, El Paso County Attorney Christina Sanchez stood alongside Texas RioGrande Legal Aid (TRLA) to address the growing rise of predatory solar panel schemes harming local families, including our seniors and residents on fixed incomes.

"Dishonest companies are using deceptive tactics to lock homeowners into expensive, long-term contracts for equipment that doesn't work," Sanchez noted.

The County Attorney's Office is fighting back . Texas law allows you to cancel a solar sales contract or loan within 5 business days of signing—and our Criminal Unit is actively holding bad actors accountable.

🛡️ Protect Yourself:
Watch out for high-pressure door-to-door sales.
Be skeptical of claims that panels will "completely eliminate" your bill.
Never sign anything on a tablet "just for a quote."
