Public safety and mental health aren’t separate issues, we have to address BOTH.
When asked how I would fight crime in Fairfield while also helping those struggling with mental illness and addiction, my answer was clear:
1. Grow our economy and increase city revenue so we can invest in our police department, bring more officers onto the force, and ensure they have the support and quality of life they need to do their jobs effectively;
2. Move beyond the Housing First approach and invest in recovery-based programs, like Mission Samoa, that address the root causes of homelessness, mental illness, and addiction. Programs like Mission Samoa provide a path from the streets to stability, connecting people with housing, mental health support, rehabilitation, and job training, with the goal of helping them become self-sufficient and productive members of our community.
We can protect our residents while also helping people rebuild their lives. That takes a comprehensive approach, and it starts with leadership willing to address the problems at their roots.
Safer streets. Stronger economy. Real pathways to recovery.
