About 1,500 Tyler ISD students go on fieldtrips to the East Texas State Fair to learn about agriculture and the importance it has in our lives.
On Wednesday, fourth and fifth graders from Bell Elementary learned how milk is produced, pet lambs and learned all about horses, cows, goats and other animals.
Texas A&M AgriLife Smith County Extension Agents and employees gave demonstrations and led the students through the tours, with help from Lindale FFA students.
Smith County 4-H Extension Agent Skyler Shivley showed the group how to milk a cow, talked about the dairy industry and its importance in our county and country.
He told them how they take care of the cows that produce the milk.
“Happy, healthy cows are going to produce more milk,” he said. “That means more milk and ice cream.”
Did you know that one cow can produce 8 gallons of milk weighing 64 pounds in one day?
Shivley said 1,500 students from Tyler ISD, as well as a few smaller private schools, send their fourth and fifth grade students every year during the two-week fair. It is a great way to teach the students about how food, clothing and other necessities are made through agriculture. Many times, the kids have never seen farm and ranch animals up close.
Smith County Judge Neal Franklin and Communications Director Casey Murphy joined the Bell Elementary students on their field trip.
Last year, Smith County became a partner with Bell Elementary through the new Community Connect program led by the Tyler Area Business Education Council and Tyler ISD. Since then, Smith County officials and the school’s administration and students have attended and participated in each other’s events and activities.
“The East Texas Fair is a great time to learn about agriculture from our AgriLife extension agents,” Judge Franklin said. “We enjoyed getting to come out today with our partner, Bell Elementary, and watch the kids learn and have fun. And it gives them a chance to see our wonderful East Texas State Fair, which has such a positive impact on our community.”
