More Education. More Career Opportunities.
New York State is expanding its free community college initiative, providing new opportunities for adults to prepare for careers in high-demand fields.
Beginning in January 2027, eligible New Yorkers ages 25–55 may qualify to attend a SUNY or CUNY community college tuition-free while pursuing an associate degree in a qualifying high-demand field — even if they have already completed a college degree in a different area.
But free community college isn’t the only opportunity available.
Already have a degree in your desired field or don’t qualify for free community college? A career in public service may provide another pathway.
Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) may allow eligible borrowers working full-time for qualifying government or nonprofit employers to have the remaining balance of their eligible federal Direct Loans forgiven after making 120 qualifying monthly payments under an eligible repayment plan.
Public service careers may include opportunities in government, education, healthcare, public safety, and qualifying nonprofit organizations.
Whether you’re looking to earn a degree, change careers, build new skills, or put an existing degree to work in public service, there may be a pathway available to you.
Explore your options and take the next step toward your career goals.
