This past summer my family and I went on a trip of a lifetime throughout parts of Scandinavia. Near Odda, Norway, my nephew Javin and I did an epic, 16 mile hike to Trolltunga, “The Troll’s Tongue”.
This incredible rock formation was formed over 10,000 years ago and juts out from a cliff, 700 meters above the Ringedalsvatnet Lake below.
The hike was epic with indescribable views. I am at a loss for words when trying to describe the beauty and vast size of the earth around us. Walking out on Trolltunga was an extremely frightening and emotional experience.
Experiences like this really puts life into perspective. You only have one life. Live it to the fullest with intention, valuing experiences and relationships. I have gone through a lot in my life. But I think it’s not much different than anyone else’s, because everyone has something they are going through. Life is hard. It’s all about how you move forward with each day.
Die young but as late as possible.

A few weeks back I participated in my first lifting competition. I had been preparing for it but I hadn’t worked out for 10 days prior to the competition due to unavoidable circumstances. I was tired, unfocused, felt unprepared, and overall I wasn’t feeling up to it so I decided to not participate. However, the day before I decided to do it because, why not, it’s for fun.
I am soo glad I did. I had soo much! Competing against .miller100 and was quite the challenge due to all of us being very competitive. The camaraderie between us helped elevate the effort, competition, and enjoyment.
The biggest take away was that it’s proof that if you are constant with your workouts, taking a week or two or three off, will not be detrimental to your strength. You do not lose that much muscle mass with a pause in training and you do not need to beat yourself up over it. Staying constant with your strength training will make you stronger and harder to get weaker.
The end results of the completion landed me in first place. Winning is fun but competing was the thrill.
Deadlift: 363 lbs. 12 lbs. off my personal best.
Bench press: 225.5 lbs.
Bench Press is my worst lift and it showed. It’s been a constant struggle my entire life.
Farmers Carry for distance in 2 minutes: 53 lbs. in each hand, carrying it for 14 lanes, ≈ 300 yards.
Trap bar deadlift for reps in 2 minutes: 265 lbs. for 30 reps.

What’s the workout you are going to start next week? By now you should have sketched out a plan. Let me know in the comments.
Day 4 is chest and back with 5 second eccentrics. Every workout is tough but I’m feeling a big difference from week one. You may feel drained and not motivated from your first week, but keep going. You will feel a huge difference in week 2 and even more so in subsequent weeks with by being consistent with your workouts.

Strength training. It’s what’s for life.
Cardio is all good, but strength training needs to be your priority. Focus on building muscle first and then pepper in your cardio.
Get out a pencil and paper out now. Start jotting down your work and must do items. Now block of times on days you absolutely can workout. Then look at my previous post on how to map out your own personal strength training program.
Day 3 is legs and shoulders with 5 second eccentrics. It’s tough to get what you want but you gotta work for it. And then you will reap the rewards of a stronger, healthier life!

KISS: Keep It Simple Stupid
Ok ok, you’re not stupid, but you may not be working out because you are overwhelmed with all the aspects of a workout. You’re not sure what to do. Stop overthinking your workouts and keep it simple.
Keeping your workouts simple is by:
1. Picking three or four days you want to train.
2. Split the days between full body workouts (3 days) or a lower/upper body split (4 days).
3. Pick 6-8 exercises that consist of a squat, hinge, push, pull, uni or bilateral movement.
4. Do these exercises for 3 sets, then move to 4 or more when you get stronger.
5. Use a rep scheme of 10 (+/- ≈5), the lower the reps the slower the tempo for the eccentric portion of the exercise.
6. Then do this workout consistently for four weeks and you will notice that you just changed your life for the better.
Day 2 is chest and back with 5 second eccentrics. It’s tough but I’m building myself back up and you will as well. All you need to do is to just start.

It’s well into the new year and I’m wondering how your workouts are going. Have you quit already? Slowed down? Still can’t find the time? Or are you crushing it and can feel a difference already and excited about your progress?
I took three weeks off and I’m starting off slow with a lower/upper body split.
Day 1 is legs and shoulders with 5 second eccentrics. Its’s tough but I’m building myself back up.

I am very proud of this man. The consistent, purposeful work that put forth has changed his body composition and improved his overall health. The scale says he “only” lost 4.5 lbs, but the real numbers show a loss of 13 lbs. of fat mass and a gain of 8.6 lbs. of lean mass.
Hunter is stronger and leaner than ever, and is a man with all smiles and hard work. You would be as well if you knew you were living a pain free, stronger life.
Lift weights, do some cardio, eat healthier, live stronger and longer.
Congratulations on all your work Hunter! It truly shows!
