COMMENTARY: Legislature, governor must improve nursing education in California 05/28/2026

“Yet when it comes to preparing the nurses our state urgently needs, California’s higher education system is misaligned, leaving talent untapped and healthcare systems strained.

Assembly Bill 2301, authored by Central Valley Assemblymember Esmeralda Soria, seeks to address this misalignment.”

We are still here at the Capitol working hard to pass bills during House of Origin week!

My Distressed Hospital 🏥 Loan Program 2.0 has passed the Assembly Floor! This bill ensures more rural hospitals won’t close their doors in the face of Trump’s big beautiful bill, which lacks the funding needed to support rural hospitals. 🏥 💰
California Hospital Association

AB 2301 also passed the Assembly floor today, a bill that would create a pilot program for 10 community college districts to offer Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSNs) to nursing students who desperately need it. Nursing students who don’t live near major cities and major universities, who don’t necessarily need to go into debt and financial distress and attend a 4-year university.

AB 2301 is my Nursing Bachelors bill that will alleviate our nursing workforce crisis! 👩‍⚕️ 🏥🩺⚕️UNAC/UHCP

LEGISLATIVE UPDATE: My bill, AB 2739, has passed the Assembly floor this week during House of Origin Deadline!

AB 2739 will support investments in water infrastructure and low-income water rate assistance—making safe, reliable, drinking water more affordable and accessible for Californians who need it the most!

This week is House of Origin Week in the CA Legislature. It means each house of the legislature (Assembly and Senate) have this week to move their bills onto the other house. This week I've already had 4 bills pass and move onto the Senate, with several more to go!

AB 2739 took a collaborative effort from grass root organization whi I've been working with since day one, like the Community Water Center, and residents in my own district who have complained about issues of affordability relating to their water utility rates.

I want to thank the Community Water Center, the SAFER Program, all our stakeholders, and the community members who continue to stand with me while we make safe drinking water and utility rates more affordable for the Central Valley!

During the month of May, we celebrate the culture and history of California’s diverse and expansive Asian and Native Hawaiian & Pacific Islander (NHPI) American communities. While we celebrate our AAPI communities’ histories, we must also stand united against the recent incidents of anti-Asian racism and hate crimes.

Let's take a moment to recognize all the incredible AAPI organizations that are rooted right here in my district throughout Madera, Fresno, and Merced Counties!
