Mexico's President Claudia Sheinbaum has mandated that Mexican consular officials conduct daily visits to U.S. immigration detention centers, replacing previous weekly inspections. The order follows the deaths of at least 15 Mexican nationals in ICE custody or during U.S. immigration enforcement operations since President Trump took office in 2025.

The decision was announced on Tuesday and responds to escalating mortality rates at detention facilities, including the Adelanto ICE Processing Center in Southern California, where four Mexican citizens have died.

The Mexican Foreign Ministry has formally characterized U.S. detention conditions as incompatible with international human rights standards and the protection of human life. Mexico has pledged to support legal efforts by detainees' families and has committed to bringing the issue before the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights and United Nations bodies to address what officials describe as systemic failures in detention facility operations.
