The Cesar Chavez Standard: Why Harvey Milk Should Not Get a Pass
Statement from California Family Council on HR 93 and the moral inconsistency at the heart of Sacramento
In March of this year, the California legislature did something remarkable. After the New York Times published a years-long investigation documenting that United Farm Workers co-founder Cesar Chavez s*xually abused two underage girls, Ana Murguia and Debra Rojas, daughters of UFW organizers, in the 1970s, lawmakers acted within days. The Senate passed AB 2156 by a unanimous 37-0 vote with an urgency clause, the Assembly approved it earlier that same week, and Governor Newsom signed it before the March 31 holiday. Cesar Chavez Day became Farmworkers Day.
The legislature was right to act. California Family Council is grateful to see Cesar Chavez facing accountability for decades-old allegations of abuse. The young women he harmed deserved the truth, and Californians deserve a state that does not name holidays after men who s*xually abused minors.
What followed was just as remarkable. In San Fernando, the city council held a special meeting and voted to remove Chávez’s statue, which came down immediately afterward. Mayor Joel Fajardo said the urgency was to “let our children know that we took this seriously.” Fresno State covered its Chávez statue with black tarp and then plywood before removing it.
The city of Fresno voted unanimously to begin reversing its 2023 decision to rename a major corridor after Chávez. In Los Angeles, Mayor Karen Bass renamed the city’s César Chávez Day holiday “Farm Workers Day” and announced a review of city landmarks bearing his name, while a City Council motion began a formal review of city-owned assets. A bronze bust came down in Denver. A statue was covered and then removed in Milwaukee. Another was dismantled at the Dallas Farmers Market. The Associated Press identified more than 130 locations or objects in at least 19 states named after Chávez, and public officials across the country continue to reassess those honors.

California Wants to Give Public Schools Permission to Celebrate the End of Ramadan
In October 2025, Governor Newsom signed AB 268 into law, making Diwali, a Hindu celebration, an official California state holiday. Public schools were authorized to close. State employees were authorized to take paid time off. And California public schools were authorized to hold exercises “acknowledging and celebrating the meaning and importance” of Diwali, with a State Board of Education curriculum guide to follow.
Now, six months later, Sacramento is moving to do the same thing for Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha, the two most significant holidays in Islam. AB 2017, authored by Assemblymember Matt Haney (D-San Francisco), has passed two Assembly committees without a single no vote. The Assembly Committee on Appropriations will decide this week if the bill will proceed to a vote by the full Assembly, which would occur by the end of the month.
Two bills. Two minority faith traditions. Two sets of school celebration exercises authorized in statute.
Christmas gets December 25 as a state holiday. Good Friday gets three hours of partial recognition (noon to 3 p.m.). Easter gets nothing. And no California statute has ever authorized public schools to hold exercises celebrating the meaning and importance of any Christian holiday.
This is not a coincidence. It is a pattern.
What are Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha?
Most Californians are not familiar with these holidays. Understanding what they are matters, because the question of whether Sacramento should be celebrating their religious meaning inside public schools is exactly what is at stake.

CA Bill Mandates Coverage of Sex-Rejecting Procedures for Minors
California lawmakers are advancing AB 1876, a bill that would further entrench the state’s role in promoting s*x-rejecting medical procedures and drugs for minors, even as a growing number of states and countries are moving in the opposite direction.
AB 1876, authored by Assemblywoman Dawn Addis, is framed as a “nondiscrimination” measure. But the substance of the bill goes much further. By redefining s*x to include gender identity, s*xual orientation, and related characteristics, the bill would prohibit insurers from denying or limiting coverage for procedures tied to gender transition if those procedures are covered in other contexts.
That means puberty blockers, cross-s*x hormones, and irreversible surgeries would be treated as protected medical services, making it far more difficult for insurers to question their necessity, especially for minors. The bill also bans categorical exclusions for gender-transition procedures, effectively narrowing insurers’ ability to weigh long-term risks, evolving evidence, or patient age.
