Today, we recognize Columbus Day and Indigenous Peoples’ Day, two observances that reflect different perspectives on American history.

Columbus Day commemorates Christopher Columbus’s 1492 voyage, which marked the beginning of sustained contact between Europe and the Americas. However, the Americas were not a vacant land. Indigenous Peoples’ Day honors the histories, cultures, resilience, and contributions of Indigenous peoples, while recognizing the lasting impacts of colonization on Native communities.

Learning about these histories and the perspectives of the people who experienced them can deepen our understanding of the past and its impact on the present.
