We've heard: "If it passes, the 1% starts right away."

The fact: If voters approve it on Nov 3, the 1% local option sales tax would take effect May 1, 2027.

Nothing would change at the register this holiday season either way.

If you've opened the credit estimator, you've seen it ask for your tax district.

Your tax district is the area your property sits in for tax purposes, and it's listed on your tax notice. It tells the estimator whether your property is inside a municipality (City of Georgetown, Andrews, or Pawleys Island).

That matters because property inside a municipality would get a share of the municipal credit on top of the county credit.

Q: Is this the same 1% sales tax voters approved in 2024?

A: No. In 2024, Georgetown County voters approved a 1% Capital Project Sales Tax, which brought the sales tax to 7%.

The question on this year's ballot is a separate 1% local option sales tax. If approved, at least 71% would go to credits on property tax bills and up to 29% would fund local services.

Two different taxes, two different questions.
