Civil War Institute at Gettysburg College The CWI engages with Gettysburg College students and general audiences in a dialogue about Civil War history.

The Civil War Institute engages with Gettysburg College students, general audiences, graduate students, and scholars in a dialogue about Civil War history through an interdisciplinary approach dedicated to public interpretation, historic preservation, public policy, teaching, and academic research. The Civil War Institute uses its resources to educate Gettysburg College students about a range of professional careers related to the study of history. Facilitating discussion among graduate students, high school students, and teachers is particularly important to the CWI's commitment to educating Gettysburg College students. The Civil War Institute offers a unique platform where undergraduates, teachers and high school students, scholars, graduate students, historic preservationists, and public historians engage general audiences.

It was a joy to celebrate the opening of two student-curated exhibitions based on the remarkable Civil War photographic collections of Ron Perisho this past weekend with a special symposium, "Memory Through Imagery, Gettysburg and Lincoln." This one day event brought together college faculty and staff involved with the exhibitions; leading historians of the Civil War and the history of photography, the student curators, Devon Szczepkowicz '26; Madeleine Ulman '26; and Michael Aaron '26; and Ron Perisho for a mix of lecture sessions about the history of Civil War photography and the amassing of this remarkable collection, a panel discussion about the experience of creating these exhibitions, and a celebratory reception in Schmucker Gallery. These unique, hands-on experiences for students are both a hallmark of a Gettysburg education and a bridge to the next step in their educational and professional journeys.

This past weekend was a very busy one on campus, with alumni returning to Gettysburg for Homecoming and the official launch of We, Here, Now: The Campaign for Gettysburg College. CWI staff and students were thrilled to have so many opportunities to put our storytelling skills to good use sharing meaningful narratives about the past, present, and future of the landscape around us and the people whose actions upon it have thoughtfully responded to the diverse needs of their own present day, and the future students, faculty, and staff who will continue to do so in the next chapters of Gettysburg College's history.

Gettysburg College at World War II Weekend! Interim Director Jill Ogline Titus’s HIST 350: Modern Black Freedom Struggle had the opportunity to visit Eisenhower National Historic Site this morning to hear Dr. Matthew Delmont discuss his book about African Americans fighting World War II at home and abroad, which they just finished reading in class. And they weren’t the only Gettysburgians on site. We also had the opportunity to see several (didn’t get photos of all of them) alumni and current students playing a role in making the event a success.
