"I want to help students believe in themselves."

Blanca Velazquez, a paraprofessional at Lincoln Elementary, is following her dream of becoming a teacher.

As an apprentice teacher at Lincoln Elementary, Velazquez is learning valuable skills via the Teacher Apprenticeship Program. Midland University received a competitive grant from the Nebraska Department of Education, and worked with GIPS to find participants for the Teacher Apprenticeship Program. Tuition, books and fees are paid for the program participants.

Velazquez wants to help students know they belong, they are cared for, and that they can succeed in the classroom.

❀

We are thankful for the Teacher Apprentice Program as we work to develop our great staff. We are grateful for Blanca and know she will be an amazing teacher!

Start with a shape and transform it!

🎨 🐸 πŸ€–

4th Graders in Mrs. Danner's Engleman Elementary Social Emotional Creative Arts (SECA) class dove into the concept of "reframing your thinking" yesterday.

Students explored optical illusion photos while discussing the power of changing perspective, and the healthy practice of viewing things differently.

The art connection?

Students started with a paper that had a circle, an oval, a square, or a cloud. Each student transformed their shape into an illustration of something else.

Julianna and Kiersten from Mrs. Carr's class did a great job of creating a frog (from an oval) and a robot (from a square).

You'll see more of this story on KSNB Local4 this month for the next, "Art from the Heart" segment!

"I want to be a teacher who will help support students to keep going, no matter what."

Blanca Velazquez, a paraprofessional at Lincoln Elementary, knows she is meant to teach. Thanks to Grand Island Public Schools' collaboration with Midland University, Blanca is working toward her teaching goal by training as an apprentice teacher.

Midland University received a competitive grant from the Nebraska Department of Education, and worked with GIPS to find participants for the Teacher Apprenticeship Program. Tuition, books and fees are paid for the program participants, who must be paraprofessionals.

This program is just one of the strategies GIPS is using to improve recruitment and focus on the great staff already in the district.

That feeling when you're learning new sound-spelling patterns and unpacking key story moments.

πŸ“– 😊

There's wonder to be found in a good story... and so much more!

2nd Graders in Mrs. Koza's class at Shoemaker Elementary have been reading classic bedtime stories in class.

While the tales are filled with creativity and fun characters, the 2nd Grade scholars are also deep into literacy growth when diving into a story. Thru reading independently, and reading together in small groups, they learn new sound-spelling patterns, are prompted to recap key moments from the story for comprehension, and can cite evidence from the story for their answers.

We love to see it!
