A BIG thank-you to Pack 115 of St. Mary’s in Aiken!

As 5th graders, these boys came together to build a Little Free Library and collect books to fill it. They then installed their library right here at Palmore Park for our community to enjoy!

The boys have now graduated on to Troop 115, and we’re so proud of the time, teamwork, and service they put into creating something that will bring joy to so many children.

We’re sharing a few photos from their bridging ceremony, along with pictures of the library box.

Next time you’re at the park, be sure to bring your littles by to pick out a book to enjoy!

Thank you, Pack 115, for giving back to our community and helping spread a love of reading! 🌟

Friday marked a very special occasion as we officially celebrated the ribbon cutting and renaming of our park and cottage. We are proud to now be known as the Recreation Center at Palmore Memorial Park.

The park was named in honor of Minnie Palmore, the first African American in Aiken County to receive a teaching certificate. Mrs. Palmore devoted more than 50 years of her life to teaching in South Carolina public schools. In 1937, she founded Palmore Kindergarten, which is still standing across the street from us today. Her daughter, Abelle Nivens, continued her mother’s legacy and renamed the school the Minnie Palmore House, preserving an important part of our community’s history for generations to come.

The stone cottage on the property was also given a new name in honor of Mr. John Hatney, the original caretaker and director of the property from 1960 to 1985. Mr. Hatney lived in the cottage throughout his tenure and dedicated many years to caring for this special place. We were incredibly honored that, at 99 years young, Mr. Hatney was able to join us for the ceremony and be a part of this meaningful celebration.

P.S. While the Recreation Center is now open, we are not quite ready to begin accepting rentals. Rentals will resume next year, but our reservation books are not open at this time. In the meantime, you’re more than welcome to stop by, visit us, and see the newly named space for yourself. We look forward to welcoming you to the Recreation Center at Palmore Memorial Park!
