One of my students asked me today, “Do you just love being mayor since everyone knows you?”
I had to pause for a second and be honest with him.
Hell no! Being mayor isn’t always glorious. When everyone knows who you are, you’re also under a microscope. Every decision, every mistake, every opinion and sometimes even things completely outside of your control can become part of the conversation.
It made me think about how young people often see a title as something to be proud of. As we get older, I think we learn that titles really don’t mean much. What matters is who you are when nobody is watching, whether you’re willing to listen, serve, whether you treat people right, and whether you actually deliver results in a leadership role.
My students this semester, a first, have decided to call me “Detective Mayor.” 😂 I have to chuckle every time I hear it. They probably don’t realize how much I enjoy it.
They also probably don’t realize that the higher you climb, the lonelier it can get. Leadership can be a lonely place because there are decisions you have to make that not everyone will understand, and sometimes there isn’t a perfect answer.
Thankfully, I have a wife who lets me vent when I need to. She listens, challenges me when I need challenged, and gives me sound advice when I’m struggling with a decision.
At the end of the day, I don’t need a title to tell me who I am.
I just want to be authentic, serve people well, make good decisions, and hopefully leave this community a little bit better than I found it.
And apparently, I’m also “Detective Mayor.” 😂
