A $1.8 million investment is helping expand access to healthcare in Greene and Columbia counties!

Columbia Memorial Health (CMH) and regional partners, including the Greene County Public Health Department, have been awarded $1.8 million through the New York Rural Health Transformation Program to strengthen behavioral health, women's health and preventative care services.

The funding will support expanded access to care, improved coordination for patients following hospital discharge and increased cancer screening outreach in rural communities.

Through this regional partnership, Greene County is helping build a stronger, more connected healthcare system that better serves residents and their families.

Please join us in congratulating Kira Pospesel, Greene County Commissioner of Social Services, recipient of the 2026 NYSAC Executive Director’s Award for Public Service!

NYSAC’s highest achievement award recognizes extraordinary public service, and Kira has spent her career exemplifying exactly that.

As the longest-serving social services commissioner in New York State, Kira brings decades of experience and an extraordinary depth of knowledge to her work. She also serves as Chair of NYSAC’s Medicaid & Human Services Standing Committee and has become one of our most trusted resources on SNAP, Medicaid, child welfare and the many programs counties administer to support New Yorkers in need.

We are grateful for her expertise, her generosity in sharing it and, above all, her many years of dedicated service to Greene County and county government across New York.

Congratulations, Commissioner Pospesel, on this well-deserved recognition!

Greene County EMS is helping make emergency care more accessible and comfortable with new sensory kits now available in transporting ambulances across the county.

The initiative was developed by Greene County EMS Coordinator Sean Hotaling to better support patients with autism, dementia, developmental disabilities, PTSD, anxiety and other sensory sensitivities. Each kit includes practical tools like noise-reducing headphones, communication cards, fidget tools, a dry-erase board and comfort items to help reduce anxiety, improve communication and create a calmer experience during emergency transport.

By equipping EMS providers with these resources, Greene County is helping ensure more compassionate, patient-centered care for individuals with a wide range of needs.

Lithium-ion batteries should never go in your household trash or recycling bin. When damaged or crushed, they can spark and ignite, creating dangerous fires in collection trucks, transfer stations and recycling facilities.

In fact, lithium-ion batteries are one of the fastest-growing fire risks in the waste stream, with fires that can burn extremely hot and be difficult to extinguish.

Help protect your home, local workers and our community by properly disposing of lithium-ion batteries at an approved collection location.
