Domestic violence can be difficult to talk about. However, silence can allow stigma, stereotypes, and misinformation about abusive relationships to continue without being challenged.

During Domestic Violence Awareness Month, consider how you might help create thoughtful conversations about abuse within the communities that are part of your life. These conversations might happen in your workplace, school, faith community, neighborhood, family, or social network.

Starting conversations does not mean pressuring survivors to share their stories or experiences. Instead, look for opportunities to raise awareness, share credible information and resources, and challenge victim-blaming or other harmful messages when you encounter them.

Even small conversations can help create a culture in which abuse is taken seriously and survivors know they will be met with compassion rather than judgment.

One way each of us can help reduce the stigma surrounding domestic violence is to learn more about abusive relationships and the experiences of survivors.

You don’t have to become an expert to become a more informed and supportive person. You can start by learning about the power and control dynamics that underlie abusive relationships, the many different forms abuse can take, and the complicated reasons why leaving an abusive relationship is not always simple or safe.

As you learn, seek information from credible sources, such as domestic violence service provider agencies and other organizations with expertise in supporting survivors. Education can also help us recognize misconceptions we may have picked up from our families, communities, media, or culture. Be willing to challenge your own assumptions as your understanding grows.

During Domestic Violence Awareness Month, consider one step you can take to deepen your understanding and become a more informed supporter of survivors.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. This month, our focus through The Source for Survivors will be on an important reason why it’s still so important to focus on raising awareness about domestic violence and other forms of abusive relationships: The stigma that many victims and survivors face.

Stigma often presents invisible barriers that make it more difficult for victims and survivors to access the help and support they need. Stigma can show up looking like harmful stereotypes, negative judgments, victim-blaming, and biases that community members and professionals may hold based on misunderstandings of the dynamics of abusive relationships.

This month, we urge each one of you to consider the various communities in which you live and with which you interact throughout your daily lives. These communities may include your neighborhoods, workplaces or schools, religious or community organizations, cultural groups, and even online social networks. And, this month, consider ways that you can help to raise awareness and help reduce the stigma that may exist in these settings.

Stay tuned here throughout this month for ideas for ways you might get involved and help promote more supportive communities and resources for victims and survivors of abuse.

Surround yourself with others (including friends, family members, and professionals) who will support you in discovering and following your own unique intuition and voice along the healing journey.

Have you ever heard the poem, The Journey, by Mary Oliver? (You can read the full poem here if you’d like: https://hellopoetry.com/poem/5249/the-journey). The poem’s conclusion is as follows:

“And there was a new voice
which you slowly
recognized as your own,
that kept you company
as you strode deeper and deeper
into the world,
determined to do
the only thing you could do--
determined to save
the only life you could save.”

What a powerful message that likely resonates with many survivors along the long-term healing journey following an abusive relationship. It’s so important to trust yourself and your intuition as you move forward (and sometimes what may feel like taking some steps backwards, too) along the journey.

Trusting yourself following years of being told by an abuser not to trust yourself is no easy task. Always try to remember that you are worthy of trusting and honoring your own unique needs, pace, and process along the way.
