Caring for a Loved One with Dementia: Effective Communication Strategies

Communication is more than just talking and listening - it is also about sending and receiving messages through tone of voice, facial expressions and body language. As people with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias progress in their journey, families need new ways to connect.

Join us as Community Educator Dona Hedgecock, with the Alzheimer's Association Western Carolina Chapter, instructs how to decode the verbal and behavioral messages delivered by someone with dementia, and shares strategies to help you connect and communicate at each stage of the disease.

Annually, Triad Retirement Living Association (TRLA) recognizes paid and unpaid caregivers who make such a meaningful difference in the lives of others each and every day. This year, at the 'In Our Sparkle Era' Caregiver Recognition & Resource Luncheon, we celebrated a few of our wonderful caregivers who were nominated; Dee Warner, Faye Price and Doug McLeroy. Based on their nomination, they were presented with the Radiant Positivity Award, Diamond Heart of Friendship Award and Guiding Light of Faith Award, respectively. Thank you to all caregivers - we hope you always feel the love and appreciation and know how much you shine!

Our Walk to End Alzheimer’s team shared lots of smiles and information about our services this morning. We also cheered the walkers as they finished as the Thank You Brigade sponsor. The star was our very own Director of Belly Rubs Hazel; she was crowned Queen 👑 by raising the most funds in the Paws for a Cause pet contest!

Powerful Tools for Caregivers is a six-week educational series designed to provide family caregivers with practical tools to care for themselves while caring for a loved one. This program helps caregivers reduce stress, improve self-confidence, communicate feelings, balance their lives, increase their ability to make tough decisions and locate helpful resources.
