Your firefighters have been busy with . In addition to learning about this year’s theme: Charge Into Fire Safety, focusing on safe use of Lithium Ion Batteries; all of the local students from Pre-K-8th grade get to visit the station, and practice a range of fire safety skills. Some students get to practice putting out a real fire with a fire extinguisher, climb out of a bedroom using an escape ladder, how to safely escape through a smoke filled room, and spray a real fire hose.

Remember, we are having our open house this Friday from 3-6PM; with most of these same activities planned for students that did not get to participate this week or want to show off what they learned to their parents! Adults are encouraged to attend for free fire extinguisher training, meet your firefighters, tour the station, and even fire truck rides!

Open house this Friday, 3-6 PM! See the event page for more.

At approximately 1:15 this afternoon, the Haines Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched for a report of a vehicle fire in the 700 block of Beach Road. Upon arrival, it was found that a vehicle had burned, likely overnight, and had spread to the surrounding wildland, burning in the roots of multiple trees and smoldering in the duff. The vehicle was completely burnt out and cold to the touch on arrival, so the crew focused on suppressing and mopping up the wildland fire. There were no injuries reported, and the vehicle owner was out of town at the time of the fire. The cause of the fire is unknown.

Yes, even in low fire danger, while it is raining, wildland fires can still happen. While this particular fire had an intensely burning vehicle fire to get it started, the same outcome can happen from unattended burn piles or burning too closely to vegetation. Thank you to the neighbors that investigated the smoke in the area and called 911. Had this been much earlier in the season, there would’ve been a much different outcome.

Thank you to our amazing crew that left their families and weekend plans to respond to this fire. HVFD responded with one rescue-engine, one engine, and two tankers; with a total of 11 responders.

Last week HVFD had a very unique opportunity to partner with the USCG to transport a critical patient out of Haines to higher medical level care. While medevac flights with the Coast Guard are not uncommon during inclement weather or darkness when standard air medical providers are unable to fly, putting one of our volunteer paramedics on board to facilitate ongoing Advanced Life Support care in-flight is unique. Normally, the coast guard will pick up medevac providers and transport them when ALS is needed, but none were available at this time.

We are extremely fortunate to have such dedicated volunteers that are willing to sacrifice their time for our community members safety and wellbeing. We are also thankful for our ongoing partnership with the U.S. Coast Guard to take care of our citizens when they need it the most.
