Don Davis is fighting for combat injured veterans by pushing to increase their monthly payments.

“Far too many veterans across our region have not received their due for the sacrifices they made serving our country," Davis, a U.S. Air Force veteran, said in a statement. "The Major Richard Star Act is about ensuring combat-injured veterans receive the full retirement and disability benefits they earned through their service. Veterans and military families in communities from Goldsboro to Elizabeth City have given so much in defense of this nation, and Congress has a responsibility to stand with them long after the uniform comes off.”

The Major Richard Star Act would allow certain combat-injured veterans to receive their full military retirement pay.

I spent 40 years working in policy and law (most of it working with Congress), and there were, of course, some moments of political shenanigans. But never have I seen such blatant pre-election pandering as I saw today on Rep Goodwin’s page.

After the constituents of his district — and my district — have been suffering for half a year from increased fuel prices driven by the Trump war in Iran, he posted a letter today on his page that he sent to the speaker
(written on Saturday — just one month before the election), raising concerns about gas prices.

(My comment on his post — about the timing of this sudden concern — did not remain on his page, of course.)

While I welcome my opponent and the rest of his Republican colleagues in the N.C. General Assembly finally taking action to help people in the district who are suffering - through a special session they’re calling this week (see
https://www.carolinajournal.com/gas-prices-drive-nc-lawmakers-to-call-for-special-session/ ) — I think it’s important to call this exactly what it is: a political stunt, based on bad pre-election polling for the Republicans, rather than true concern, since true concern would have necessitated action months ago.
