Where do New Jersey’s congressional candidates stand on the food and farm issues that shape our state?

As part of our Your Vote. Our Food System. campaign, we invited all candidates for Congress in New Jersey to answer questions about federal policies affecting farmers, food access, local markets, climate resilience, institutional purchasing, and food system infrastructure.

We’re sharing their responses so voters can hear directly from candidates and better understand how federal policy decisions affect New Jersey’s farmers, families, communities, and food system.

So far, we have received responses from 5 candidates, which can be viewed at the link below. We’ll continue updating the guide as additional responses come in.

If your candidates have not responded to NJFDC yet, we encourage you to reach out to them with questions that reflect the needs of you, your farm, your family, or your community.

Why does that matter? Federal food policy doesn’t just happen in Washington. It can shape what food is purchased and served in communities across New Jersey.

Programs that support local food purchasing can help schools, food banks, and other institutions buy from local and regional producers creating markets for farmers while helping more locally grown food reach communities.

Congress helps shape the laws and funding that support food and agriculture programs like these. That means the people elected to Congress can influence the future of local and regional food systems.

That’s why we’re creating a nonpartisan voter education series to help New Jersey residents better understand how congressional elections connect to food and agriculture policy.

New Jersey’s food system is at a turning point and this year’s Summit is focused on what we need to build next.

Food doesn’t move from farms to communities on its own. It takes strong supply chains, partnerships, data, coordination, funding, and the infrastructure that connects it all.

At the 5th NJ State of the Food System Summit, we’ll bring together farmers, food system leaders, advocates, researchers, funders, and community partners to explore how stronger infrastructure can help build a more resilient, equitable food and farm system across New Jersey.

📅 December 10 | New Brunswick
🎟️ Early bird registration is open through October 16. General admission is pay-what-you-can, with a suggested price of $45, including lunch, coffee/tea, and snacks.

Your vote helps shape the future of food access in New Jersey. 🥫🗳️

Food banks don’t rely on donations alone. Federal programs like The Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP) provide USDA foods and funding that help food banks store, distribute, and deliver food to communities.

Congress helps shape the laws and funding behind programs like these. Those decisions can affect food banks, pantries, soup kitchens, and the families they serve across New Jersey.

At the New Jersey Food Democracy Collaborative, we believe everyone deserves clear, nonpartisan information about how federal policy affects our food system.

Swipe through to learn why this election matters for food banks and make a plan to vote before Election Day.

Congress plays a major role in shaping the policies and funding behind our local food system.

Federal decisions can influence everything from support for farmers and conservation to nutrition programs, food distribution, and efforts that help schools and communities access more local food.

Those choices can have real effects here in New Jersey on farmers, families, schools, food banks, and the communities that depend on a strong regional food system.

Understanding that connection is an important part of being an informed voter.

That’s why we’re creating a nonpartisan voter education series to help New Jersey residents better understand how congressional elections connect to food and agriculture policy.

Follow along, subscribe to our newsletter, and stay tuned for more resources.
