Many youth in our juvenile justice (JJ) system have adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) that increase their risk of mental health issues as well as risky behaviors. This is evident in our JJ system, with over 70% of youth in Texas Juvenile Justice Department facilities having moderate to high mental health needs in 2023. Texas’ lack of mental health services and counseling for youth leads to them being funneled into prison-like lock ups, which only worsens their mental health problems. Investing more in community-based mental health services will help keep youth out of our struggling juvenile justice system.
