~Chairman's Statement~

The final selection for the DHHS was done on Friday the 20th of MAY 2022. We apologize for the delay in announcing the recipients, there were so many applicants so we had to keep checking and be careful with our selection to ensure that the candidates met the selection criteria.

Firstly, on the DHHS Grant itself, this is the initiative of Governor Bird to recognize Community Based Organizations, Faith Based Organizations, and Art and Culture Groups in East Province who are doing outstanding community work in their local settings by offering a grant of $50.000.00 each from his provincial support grants. The Governor nominated an independent committee to screen the applications with myself as the chairman and based on this initial round a total of 95 successful applicants have been selected to receive grants of $50.000.00 each totaling and following the implementation of their programs and acquittal of the funds more grants will be made available and another round announced next year.

Some of the main criteria from selection included
1. Over 3years of operation of the group
2. Registration was favorable
3. A group account was a must (It was not just about creating a bank account. The transaction history of a group over time is important)
4. Proof of the great work already done by the group especially through photographs
5. The extent of the benefit or number of beneficiaries of their work
6. The soundness of their proposal
7. Credibility of their references

There was a total of 346 applications received were received by the closing date on Friday the 20th of May 2022.

A major reason for the rejection of many great applicants was the lack of a group bank account which was essential for good governance. It is an eye opener and a great learning opportunity for our people to formally register their work. Microbanks now make it much easier for our people to open bank accounts so that will help overcome that hurdle.

Many applicants were also rejected as they were personal businesses or SME’s. Let me make it clear that this was not a grant for SME’s or personal businesses. That being said due to the interest shown by SMEs as the chairman I will be recommending the Governor allocate funding to the banks for an SME grant and that will be announced in due course so do not be disheartened if you are not considered as an SME. This grant was for DHHS grant are there will be other opportunities for other categories of organizations.

Finally, this grant was announced in a short period of time so there wasn’t enough time for most people to prepare their proposals but future Grants will be announced over a longer period of time and awareness will be carried out at the District level as well to give our people adequate opportunity. congratulations to the successful applicants.
