Founder of The Francis Firm P.C., specializing in Family Law and Civil litigation, and former Assistant Attorney General, TaKasha has demonstrated legal prowess in both private and public sectors. Congratulations to all of our newest Texas lawyers!

Take a moment and really appreciate what you have accomplished. You worked hard for this. You sacrificed for this. And now, you are entering what I believe is one of the greatest professions in the world. I hope you enjoy this moment, celebrate responsibly (that’s an order! 😊), and never forget the responsibility and privilege that come with being called a lawyer.

I look forward to seeing all the great things you will do, and hopefully seeing some of you in the Harris County courts!

And to those who didn’t get the news you hoped for today, this part is for you, too. Please don’t internalize this disappointment or allow one test result to make you question whether you belong in this profession. You do.

Take the time you need. Then regroup, refocus, and use this moment as fuel. Persevere. Your path may look a little different than you planned, but that doesn’t mean you won’t get there.

Today may not have been your day, but your day is coming. Keep going. We’ll be waiting to welcome you!

Protect it. Improve it. Pass it on. This is the motto of my law school Thurgood Marshall School of Law at Texas Southern University that proudly bears his name. On this day in 1967, Thurgood Marshall was sworn in as the first Black Justice of the United States Supreme Court.

As a judge myself, I am honored to carry forward the legacy of an esteemed jurist who helped change the course of justice in America.

You don’t have to know EVERYTHING before you start.

Recently, I was asked what it takes to become a judge. Beyond the legal requirements, I thought about something my late debate coach, the legendary Dr. Thomas F. Freeman, often said: “You learn by doing.”

Have the skills to get in the door. Then give yourself permission to learn once you get in the room.

Don’t let what you don’t know yet stop you from starting.
